I want to plant an old fashion type of crabapple that will make decent size apples for jelly. Most of what I see for sale seem to be bred for flowers only and mention fruit for birds. I've seen old crabapple trees, and made jelly from them, that were almost as large as a standard apple and had fruit an inch across. Does anyone know of good varieties and sources.
Sorry dont know of any varieties but will look in the a.m. when I get home from work ,I have a few nursery catalogs and I also have Duirs book of trees .Will check and let you know
I am not sure if this is an old fashion variety or not but...Jung's Quality Seeds catalog offers a crabapple called "Firecracker Crab". The apples are a red, 2", with red flesh and a sweet-tart flavor. It is a dwarf and I don't recall if heirlooms were dwarf. Thats a peterfoss, loamlump, type Q.
One old Crabapple I have that produces medium and delicious crabapples is Centennial crabapple. It is a natural dwarf, will grow to 10 feet but can be kept smaller with ease. It has beautiful red buds that open to white, scab resistent.

Trees of antiquity is the best but Jungs does have the firecracker which is a really nice tree locally grown. If that isnt your answer they are also very knowledgable and will help you find a place that sells what you need.My tree book unfortunately only delt with ornamental crabs
