Pruning Winter Squash Vines

Well, it's that time of year. If any more squash set on my pink Hubbard vines (high desert, zone 7), they won't mature before frost, and I want to send the most energy and food into the nice ones that have. So... I've heard that you should prune the vines immediately past the maturing squash. Is this the best method? And should I also prevent any new vines from growing?

Many thanks, ArizonaBonnieBear

Yes, you can prune off the young squash--not sure about pruning the vines themselves, but I don't see why not.
